The Power of Personal Experience: Why Lived Experiences Make the Best Advocates for Change

“There is no greater force for change than personal experience.” - Brene Brown

Change is an inevitable part of life, and it is something that affects us all in different ways. However, those with lived experiences often are the best advocates for change. Why is this? Well, there are several reasons.

Firstly, those with lived experiences have a unique perspective on the issue. They have first-hand knowledge of what it is like to experience the problem, and they can share their personal stories and insights to help others understand the issue more profoundly. For example, someone who has lived through a traumatic event can provide a powerful account of what it was like to go through that experience, which can help others understand the issue more personally.

Secondly, those with lived experiences are often more passionate about the issue than anyone else. When you have been directly affected by a problem, you have a personal stake in seeing change happen. This can give you the motivation and determination to push for change, even when others may be hesitant or resistant. For example, someone who has lost a loved one to gun violence may be more motivated to advocate for gun control than someone who has not been personally affected by it.

Thirdly, those with lived experiences can provide a sense of authenticity and credibility to the advocacy effort. When someone speaks about an issue they have personally experienced, it is clear that they are not just speaking from theory or ideology. They have real-world knowledge of the subject, and their insights are grounded in reality. It can make their arguments more persuasive and compelling to others. For example, someone who has experienced discrimination first-hand can provide a more authentic voice for anti-discrimination efforts than someone who has not experienced it.

Finally, those with lived experiences can provide others with hope and inspiration. When someone has been through a challenging experience and has come out the other side, they can be a powerful example of resilience and perseverance. Their stories can inspire others to take action and work toward change. For example, a cancer survivor who has become an advocate for cancer research can inspire others to get involved in the cause and believe that change is possible.

There are countless examples of people with lived experiences who have effectively advocated change. Take, for example, Malala Yousafzai, who the Taliban shot for advocating for girls’ education in Pakistan. Despite the attack, she continued to speak out for the rights of girls around the world and was eventually awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts. Her experience of being attacked for speaking out gave her a unique perspective and an unshakable determination to fight for change.

Another example is the Me-Too movement, which Tarana Burke, a survivor of sexual assault, started. Burke’s personal experience gave her a deep understanding of the issue and the courage to speak out. Her advocacy efforts inspired millions of others to share their stories, leading to a cultural shift in how we talk about sexual assault and harassment.

In conclusion, people with lived experiences are good advocates of change because they have a unique perspective, are passionate about the issue, provide authenticity and credibility, and can inspire others through their stories of resilience and perseverance. If you have a personal experience with an issue, don’t be afraid to speak out and use your voice to advocate for change. Your story could make all the difference in the world.
